Comments on Paris Video
By Fayyaz Sheikh
Although Muslims should adjust and be sensitive to local culture, but the reporter’s commentary on video is exaggerated for anti-Muslim propaganda purpose. In France, anti-Muslim fever is at its height and everything is exaggerated and labeled as taking over of France by Islam and Sharia Law. However, I think Muslims should not be holding prayers in street. They should follow the local zoning laws and have two prayers inside the Mosque and not blocking the streets.
One could see some Muslims even praying on Airports and other public places and displaying “in your face” kind of attitude than coming across as humble and respectful of local sensitivities. This is totally un-necessary especially considering, during the travel, Islam allows saying “Kaza” prayer at home or when you reach your destination.
Unfortunately this is the failure of Muslim Religious Leadership who clings to old ideas and does not have a clue how to deal with today’s realities; and then wonders why our 95 % of Muslim youths are not connected to mosque, and why 29% hide their religious identity? , as per Gallup survey.
i agree w /dr. sheikh. this attitude shown on the video is not just wearing your religion on your sleeve but all over your body. it’s not necessary and it always draws a negative reaction.
A similar video appeared in BBC showing Muslims in Moscow praying outside the mosque on the snow covered street of Moscow. It was reported that Muslims from former USSR controlled Central Asian countries are now heading for Moscow and one person was shown commenting that Moscow now seems to be a Muslim city.
A view of existentialism proposes that human beings live three types of life: a) aesthetic life, b) moral life, and c) religious life which in stead of integrating with each other clash with each other. Moreover the religious life not only clashes with other two lives, but supercedes every other way of life, even every other thought or philosophy. This video is an open example of Muslim demonstrating that their religious life supercedes every other responsibility and thus they proudly cross the limits of aesthetic decency and moral values. Here I agree with Dr. Nasik that the positive outcome of such a behavior is to permit the Muslims to have huge mosques so that they do not have to block the streets.
Religion is a private affair not a public affair. if we follow this principle then we will not offend people who follow different religion and all will live in peace.
We should know that one person religion is other person trash, therefore we should be considerate in praying in Public specially in a country whose majority follow different religion.
Just like we are offended by people kissing and having sex intimacy in public as our religion don’t allow that, on same note praying in public for those who follow different religion is very bothersome for them. Religion is between God and the individual, the problem start when we make religion a public affair.
