“Fired for Being Beautiful”

All of which might come as a surprise to Melissa Nelson, a 33-year-old dental assistant in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Ms. Nelson, you see, was fired in 2010 by her dentist boss, James Knight, because she was too attractive. Mr. Knight, who is married, said he felt that Ms. Nelson’s beauty was simply too tempting to pass unnoticed and that he was worried he would have an affair with her. And so as a pre-emptive move (and at his wife’s insistence), he fired her.

Ms. Nelson sued on grounds of sex discrimination. Stunningly, an Iowa district court dismissed the case, contending that she was fired “not because of her gender but because she was a threat to the marriage of Dr. Knight.” Naturally, she appealed, but last week the Iowa Supreme Court upheld the lower court’s decision (for the second time), maintaining its view that an employee “may be lawfully terminated simply because the boss views the employee as an irresistible attraction.”

Yes, like some Midwestern Taliban tribunal, the Iowa Supreme Court permitted a male boss to fire anyone who might conceivably tempt him. Mullah Omar would approve.

Maybe we ought to reconsider the case of Samantha Elauf, a Muslim teenager from Oklahoma, on whose behalf the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued Abercrombie & Fitch in 2009 after she was not hired because her hijab did not meet the retailer’s appearance policy. Maybe instead, the Iowa Supreme Court should require all beautiful women to wear burqas. With Ms. Nelson completely covered, Mr. Knight could pay full attention to his patients’ dental concerns — while ignoring the ethical cavity that mars discrimination law in Iowa.

Thought for the Day 06/18/2013

These lines are written by Noor Salik:

Thinkers Forum USA Affiliates!

Yesterday EDITORIAL BOARD posted two postings on WWW.ThinkersForumUSABlog.Org

(1) “Turkey’s False Nostalgia” by Edhem Eldem

(2) Islam at War – with Itself

Both of these postings are critically important.

Let us see how many people will comment on these.

Based on my past few years of experience,  very few people will comment on it.

I may be wrong but we will see.

I read both postings. I also wrote brief comments. I will write few more as well.

Islam at War – with Itself is written by Murtaza Haider – most probably a Pakistani journalist, writer or a professor.

Turkey’s False Nostalgia” is written by Edhem Eldem – a renowned Turkish Historian teaching at some Turkish University.

In the last 500 years we can easily see what is happening in the Muslim world and what is happening in Europe.

During this period, Western (not Eastern) Europe saw Renaissance.

In Muslim world there were 3 Islamic Empires:

(i)            Ottoman/Turkish Empire in Turkish speaking and Arabic speaking Islam

(ii)          Safvid (If name is incorrect it can be corrected) in Persian speaking Iran

(iii)        Mughal Empire in India (Northern India only)

We can easily compare what Muslims did in last 500 years and what Western European did in the last 500 years.

Europe got Freedom from Dogma, in Math they developed Analytic Geometry and developed/discovered Calculus.

All modern/advanced mathematics is based on and because of Calculus.

All modern technology and Physics are because of Mathematical developments.

In Philosophy major names are: Descartes, Leibnitz, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Bertrand Russell etc. etc.

In Muslim world you tell me what Turks did?

Iranian created great poetry and Mysticism. (Iqbal’s PhD dissertation)

Mughal Empire: Taj Mahal; Some Forts; Some Mughlai recipes, Qawali /Mushaera – Fatawa-e-Alamgiri (You tell me more if you know)

Muslim world (especially Muslim Intellectuals) are still in the firm clutches of Dogma.

Western educated mind is guided by REASON/LOGIC.

The problem is Muslim Intellectuals not masses.

Masses (east/west/north/south) do not live by REASON/LOGIC – they live by dogma, religious belief systems, and music/sport/gossip.

All societies are governed by their intellectual elites.

This will and can continue …….. if you respond.

An Evening With Saiyid Ali Naqvi

An evening with Saiyid Ali Naqvi

Yesterday, 03/29/2013 Syed Suhail Rizvi and Noor Salik spent about 5 plus hours with Saiyid Ali Naqvi.
The session started around 5:00 PM and ended after 10:00 PM.
What is so special about it and why it is being shared with other Thinkers Forum USA affiliates?

Let us start with Saiyid Ali Naqvi:
Saiyid Ali Naqvi is an octogenarian intellectual who can discuss complex issues. He can quote verbatim Ghalib and Iqbal when expressing any literary, philosophic or mystical point of view.

He had his engineering degree from Aligarh University (India) and migrated to Pakistan by choice.
He played important roles in the building of Mangla and Tarbela dams, holding technical and managerial positions.
Recently his 800 plus pages book “Indus Waters and Social Change: The Evolution and Transition of Agrarian Society in Pakistan” has been published by OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS.
Some details about the book will be shared with you later on.
He has provided enough information in his book to enable the public, especially the policy makers to hold informed debates in order to resolve the problems impeding the social and economic transformation.

Personally I wanted to sit with him for two reasons:
(1) I could express any point of view without any fear of condemnations.
(2) I want to listen and understand various interpretations of Ghalib’s complex verses.

In regards to TF USA (Thinkers Forum USA) he feels that TF USA affiliates talk about “Religion” especially Islam excessively. There are lots of social and economic topics which need our attention.

He did not fully agree with me when I said “At present time Muslims are more obsessed with religion than any other group”. He said religious fervor is on the rise in the whole world except very few regions.
What are those regions? Let us hear from you – what do you think?
